Causes of hearing loss

The cause of your child’s hearing loss could be temporary or permanent, but the difference isn’t always obvious.

Glue Ear
A glue ear is very common in children and there’s a good chance that your child will suffer from this — you may notice a fluctuation in your child's hearing. Most cases are temporary.

Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SNHL)
Damage to the inner ear can result in a permanent disruption of signals being sent to the brain. A moderate or above degree of SNHL is usually identified in the new born hearing screening.

Auditory Processing Difficulties (APD)
Even if your child can hear perfectly well, there may still be issues in the way sounds are interpreted by the brain. This may seem like your child isn’t listening, but in fact they just didn’t understand.

Babies are screened at birth, but if your child is older and you’re worried that they may have hearing difficulties, then you can look out for the TV being too loud, not responding to their name, delayed speech, and difficulty understanding in noisy environments. Book a test.

Pure Tone Audiometry may be used, but Play Audiometry is the most common and involves the child wearing headphones and is asked to perform a task with toys when they hear a sound. If you’re concerned, you can book a test for your child.

The normal decibel range is 0-20, which means that they should be able to hear a quieter noise than a whisper. Those who can’t, usually experience difficulties at school. If you are concerned about your child’s hearing, book a test with our friendly audiologists.

You may have heard of the term ‘glue ear’ which we refer to as Otitis Media with Effusion (OME). This is the most common and involves fluid build-up the other side of the ear drum making it difficult for the sound waves to travel through the hearing system.

70DB is the recommended limit for children, with earphones and headphones being a particular concern at high volumes. Conveniently, many phones and tablets include controls to limit the maximum volume in the settings.

Reviews

"Great with my young son. Friendly, approachable and efficient." ~Heather Somerscales

"I was so impressed with the care we received at Clifton Audiology. Mehreen has carried out two hearing assessments on my four year old and both times she's been extremely patient, he was actually looking forward to going the second time! She also explained everything to me very clearly and made me feel at ease, I would most definitely recommend." ~Sam Nye
